Our mission is to increase pronghorn populations in Arizona through habitat improvements, habitat acquisition, the translocation of animals to historic range, and public comment on activities affecting pronghorn and their habitat.  As a 501c3 nonprofit, all of our proceeds help advance our mission.

McDonald Fence Removal, (GM Unit 30A)

November 20, 2021 starting at 8:00am

Link to Project Flyer

Project Location:  Private land approximately 28 miles east of Douglas Arizona off the Geronimo Trail.

Project Begins:  The workday will be on Saturday only, November 20th, please meet at camp by 8:00AM.

Project Activity:  Saturday we will remove .8 of a mile of old fence and transport the wire to a single pick up location. We will be able to utilize ATVs along the fence line.

Pronghorn Benefits:  This effort is a continuation of our Southeastern Arizona Grasslands Pronghorn Initiative project begun in 2010. It is occurring on the south end of the San Bernardino Valley pronghorn complex and will enhance Pronghorn habitat connectivity/permeability in this zone. This is a joint cooperative landowner/AAF project whereby we are doing the fence removal and wire disposal and we paid $2,400 or 50% for the new fence materials. The McDonald ranch paid for the remaining 50% of the new fence materials and will reconstruct the new fence to wildlife/pronghorn standards in the next 6-months. It is funded by our monthly online raffle sales receipts.

What to Bring:  Work gloves (AAF will have a limited supply), Saturday lunch, snacks, water, personal gear.

Meals:  Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. AAF will provide dinner for all volunteers on Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Contact:   Please register by Monday, November 15th so we can plan to have enough food and tools for everyone. The direct link to register online for this project is https://azantelope.org/event-4534792 .  You may also RSVP to info@azantelope.org. The AAF phone number for project info/questions is 480-702-1045.

Directions to Camp:

AAF project/camp site will be on private land, approximately 28 miles west of Douglas.

From Douglas to the campsite: You will roll into Douglas on Hwy 80 if you came from Tombstone, Willcox, or Bisbee. The first major intersection with a stoplight is Pan American Avenue; you'll want to take a left at that light, so get in the left lane as you roll into town. Take a left at the light; you'll still be following Hwy 80 north for a hot minute. But you'll want to TURN RIGHT almost immediately after making that left turn through the light onto 16th Street. Then make another quick right at the end of that block onto F street. One block south on F Street, take a left onto 15th Street. You'll now be headed east out of Douglas, toward the hill with the "D" on it. This road is paved for a ways, then turns to gravel. You will then be on the Geronimo Trail. Stay on this road for approximately 28 miles. It winds through the hills, travels east along the border, then finally bends north just before reaching the Slaughter Ranch Museum and the San Bernardino Wildlife Refuge. Stay on Geronimo Trail as it heads north, then hooks to the right, then heads northeast again. About 5.75 miles past the San Bernardino Game Refuge Road (the only major turn to the right off Geronimo Trail after you pass the Slaughter museum), you'll reach a fork in the road. Take the left fork to stay on Geronimo Trail (the right fork becomes Guadalupe Rd). Continue north on Geronimo Trail another 4.5 miles to the turnoff to the campsite, which is on the left, just before Mile Marker 26 (it's .8 miles past MM 25).  In all, you will have traveled approximately 28 miles from the traffic light in Douglas. The campsite is near a corral approximately 1.2 miles west of Geronimo Trail.
